About Us
Why Change the Name?
The name “Labrador” was first recorded in 1878 by Robert Muir, a local developer who claimed the Broadwater reminded him of Canada’s Labrador coast. But in 2025, our suburb is nothing like a cold, foreign coastline — it’s a warm, evolving community with stunning views, vibrant retail, and coastal living.
“Broadwater” already defines our area. It appears in:
-
Broadwater Parklands
-
Broadwater Tourist Park
-
Broadwater Canal estate
-
Real estate branding (e.g. Broadwater Views)
Estate
-
Countless local businesses, clubs, and events
-
Residents overwhelmingly identify with the term Broadwater — not Labrador. It’s how we describe where we live, meet, and spend time.

-
We believe the name of our suburb should reflect the place we’ve become — not what was written down 150 years ago.

-
Changing a suburb name isn’t unprecedented. In fact, Elston was successfully renamed Surfers Paradise in 1933. Like us, their community wanted a name that matched its vision and future.
The time has come for us to do the same.
